February is the shortest month of the year, but there is still plenty to do! We’ve put together selected lectures and talks, festivals, exhibitions, and other events, some related to the immigrant experience in the US and in NY in particular, others to women and feminism. Talk: Where are the Women in Foreign Policy

Women are still underrepresented in foreign policy positions in government, academia, think tanks, and media. Join a discussion to better understand why and explore possible solutions with the two co-founders of Foreign Policy Interrupted, an organization dedicated to amplifying female voices in this field, and several others.

Talk: MOCATALKS: Archivist of Chinese Americana
In Manhattan: Museum of Chinese in America, 215 Centre Street
Reflect over the relationship between material culture and immigrant identity with a selection of objects collected by Chinese-American critic Hua Hsu from immigrant households – old suitcases, photographs, newspaper clippings, souvenirs.

Storytelling/Poetry: Women of Letters
In Manhattan: Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, 425 Lafayette Street
Don’t miss this inspiring storytelling and poetry evening with female writers, comedians, and other artists. This month, guests include two women immigrants, Maria Popova, a Brooklyn-based Bulgarian writer, and Sabrina Jalees, a Canadian comedian and dancer now based in NYC. The event is hosted by Sofjia Stefanovic, a Serbian-born, Australian-grown writer living in New York.

Theatre & photo exhibit: “Beyond Sacred” Community Forum and Opening Reception for the “Faces of Islam”
In Queens: Queens Museum, Flushing Meadows Corona Park
This event presented by students from La Guardia Community College will start with an interactive theater demonstration and Community Forum, focused on stimulating discussion around the perceptions and experience of the American Muslim community in post 9/11 America. It will be followed by the opening reception of the “Faces of Islam” exhibition, featuring portraits of local New Yorkers.

We’re starting to run our LEAD Program!
In Brooklyn: 278 44th Street, 2nd Floor
Run by New Women New Yorkers in partnership with Atlas: DIY, LEAD is a 3-month skills training and leadership development program for young women immigrants between 16 and 24 years old. Through the 12 weekly workshops, final project, and field visit forming the program, you will gain a set of key skills and tools that will help you succeed in college or university and start off your career. There are still a couple of spots available, so just reach out to us if you’re interested in signing up, or if you know others who may be interested please sent them our way!

Workshop: Negotiation Skills Workshop for ambitious women in the workplace
In Manhattan: 216 East 47th Street, 8th Floor
Join this fantastic workshop facilitated by Jamie Lee – be ready to roll up your sleeves and flex your asking muscles in confidence-building mock negotiation sessions! Together, we will explore ways to take smart, calculated risks in the workplace through mutual win negotiation strategies. Instead of settling for what’s “safe or reasonable,” you’ll be challenged to think bigger for your future success. Instead of second-guessing, you’ll practice articulating your value in a clear and effective manner that places you firmly in a position of power.
All proceeds of the workshop will go toward funding New Women New Yorkers’ LEAD Program for young women immigrants from underprivileged backgrounds.
