New York City’s top 10 immigrant groups

Between 2000 and 2011, the foreign-born population in the city increased from 2.87 million to 3.1 million. The diagram below shows the distribution of the 10 largest immigrant groups in New York City in 2011. Immigrants from the Dominican Republic are the largest foreign-born group in New York City with 380,200 residents, accounting for 12 percent of the total number of immigrants and 18 percent of the population of the top 20 immigrant groups. The Chinese, with 350,200 residents, are in second place. Both the Dominicans and the Chinese have maintained these rankings since 1990. Dominican growth, however, was only 3 percent during this period, compared to a 34 percent increase for the Chinese. If this development continues, the Chinese will likely be the largest immigrant group in New York City within the next few years.
