It’s been a week since we hosted our Community Storytelling Show, but we still feel deeply moved and uplifted by the stories we heard. Immigrant women from Belarus, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Africa, and Ukraine, graduates of our storytelling training series facilitated by our partner, The Moth, told their unique real-life tales live in an exclusive showcase for our community. The twelve hours of training were facilitated by instructors from The Moth, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to the art of storytelling.
The hours of preparation to craft compelling stories have paid off. Storytellers delivered a stellar performance, filling everyone’s Zoom screens with smiles, tears, awe and expressions of encouragement through emoticons and in the chat. Sandra, from Colombia, shared how she found strength and a new path after losing her dream job in the early months of the pandemic. Eirene took us to the Astoria of her childhood, and her anxious wait for the tooth fairy. Anna, from Russia, recounted her participation in a meeting to be a volunteer English teacher at a New York library. As the only foreign-born in the room and zero teaching experience, she found herself in the wrong place. Throughout the process, though, she realized she has exactly what the other candidates are missing: a wild imagination and the survival skills on how to navigate life in the US as an immigrant.
Our superb Master of Ceremonies Anastassiya Maximenko, LEAD and Storytelling graduate as well as a NWNY volunteer, didn’t disappoint either, keeping the audience engaged with fun interlude activities and an incredible energy.
